St Peter's Church, St Peter's Square

Sat 12th September 2015

Hereford is a safe and welcoming city, rich in history and beautiful countryside but still only a one-and a-half hour drive away from Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol.

It gained its status as a city, not by virtue of its ancient Cathedral but though prescription and Royal Charter granted first in 1154 by Henry I.

St Peter's Church is the venue for the 55+ and Retirement Roadshow to be held on Saturday 12th September 2015.

venue-for-55+-and-retirement-roadshowHereford is a wonderful place to live and work and retains much of its rich history while still managing to offer an excellent range of shops, cafes, restaurants and interesting things to see and do.

Following development of The Old Market, the range of shops has greatly increased; from well-known high street names through to independent retailers, to offer something for everyone.

It boasts an array of fine buildings and squares, the River Wye and green spaces, along with stories from locals that accompany every stone, brick and oak frame of the city that is their home. High Town is the hub of Hereford city centre and provides a central open space for a variety of events and street entertainment throughout the year.

On the day of the show we are very pleased to welcome Mr Jesse Norman, MP for Hereford and The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Hereford, Councillor Charles Nicholls and the Mayoress Mrs Jenny Tawn who will both be visiting the show and meeting the exhibitors during the day.

The Venue

St Peter's is in the centre of Hereford in St Peter's Square at the junction of Union Street and St Owen Street. This church used to have a reputation for being cold, dark and difficult to access, but following a brave decision by the Parochial Church Council (PCC), to commission a £450,000 redevelopment, the building has been transformed.
It now has under-floor heating, disabled access, lighting, a fitted kitchen and wi-fi installed to become what is now a welcoming, accessible and flexible space that can be used for any activity.

The show

The 55+ and Retirement Roadshows are exhibitions aimed at anyone aged around 55 and onwards. We cover all sorts of issues that affect this age group and our aim is to provide an information hub where people can come along and find out the answers to problems of concern to them.

This year we have been working together with The Local Pharmaceutical Committee (LPC) on events with the aim to reach out to more people on health issues and keeping well.

ASDA will be at the show  with other pharmacists members of the LPC at Hereford. They are representing the work that pharmacists carry out in the community and they are being supported by their pharmacy colleagues in the community who are distributing leaflets about the show in their own pharmacies.

When out and about promoting this show, there have been several points that have come up time and time again. They are:-

  • What will the forthcoming changes to pensions mean to me?
  • Is my tax code correct?

There has been a great deal of interest in the forthcoming changes to the state pension and also the relaxation of rules on how people take their pensions.

So I'm pleased to say that The Pensions Advisory Service are coming down from London and our local Pension Wise service will also be at this event.

If you have a query with Tax, come along and speak to Tax Help for Older People as they will be available to deal with any questions on this subject.

Tesco Superstore are providing the refreshments at the show and invite you all to come along and have a cup of tea, or coffee, and a biscuit with them. They will be delighted to see you. They also have a stand with lots of info and goodies so come along and enjoy their hospitality during the show.
